Abstract

Sukawati art market is one of the traditional markets located in Gianyar Regency. Sukawati Art Market was built to accommodate works of art made by the community and then sold to consumers. At that time, many galleries or artshops sprung across the village to the Sub-district. Sukawati Art market is thriving in Gianyar Regency since 1983. The public activities, mostly as craftsmen, are one of the sustainability supporting factors of the Sukawati art market. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by looking for any interactions that occur in Sukawati art market so as to make Sukawati art market as the identity of Gianyar city. The result of this research is, the dominant Sukawati community is a craftsman with various kinds of handicrafts both silver handicrafts, sculpture, paintings and also fabrics. The other result is the Sukawati market as the city's identity is formed by the social interaction of local people who are artistic craftsmen. This is what makes Sukawati art market as the identity of Gianyar city.
