Abstract

This research aims to analyze the meaning of both verbs. Both Nugu and hazusu are Japanese
verbs which having the same lexical meaning ‘take off’, but contextually the meanings are
different.The data were collected from article posted on website asahi.com by observation
method and note-taking techniques. They were analyzed using distribution method and Natural
Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory. The results show that both nugu and hazusu have the
same meaning that is 'to take off something worn by someone’. The difference is on the entity.
Nugu is used to indicates to take off something that covers some or all parts of body, for
examples: hat, shirt, pants or slippers. In the other hand, hazusu indicates to take off something
that cover small parts of body or part of something worn, for examples: gloves, glasses, or belt.
